Dr. Natalya Kos’myna is a Research Scientist at the MIT Media Lab’s Fluid Interfaces group and a Visiting Faculty Researcher at Google. With more than 15 years of experience designing and building end-to-end brain–computer interfaces, she works at the intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning, neuroscience, and human–computer interaction to advance practical, human-centered neurotechnology.
Her research explores how AI-enabled neurotechnology can support learning and performance, which raises both exciting opportunities and critical questions for nursing education and clinical learning. Dr. Kos’myna’s interactive systems and projects have been deployed in classrooms, hospitals, workplaces, and aerospace contexts, including implementations in lower earth orbit and on the moon. Her work focuses on translating research into consumer-grade AI systems that are usable, robust, and ethically grounded—emphasizing data quality, model validity, bias mitigation, and responsible governance when neuro-data is used for decision support.
Director of Nursing Research & Education and ProfessorPrincipal Investigator of ELNEC, City of Hope
This award honors Dr. John P. McGovern for his noted clinical practice and research, and his distinguished record of scholarship, skill, and service.
Dr. Betty Ferrell is Director of Nursing Research & Education and a Professor at City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, California. A nationally recognized leader in palliative and end-of-life nursing education, she has devoted her career to improving care for people with serious illness and supporting the nurses who care for them. Dr. Ferrell’s personal experiences as an oncology nurse shaped her commitment to strengthening palliative and end-of-life education across nursing practice and training. That commitment helped lead to the creation of the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), a joint train-the-trainer initiative launched in partnership with ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø in 2000. As Principal Investigator of ELNEC, she was instrumental in developing the curriculum and expanding this train-the-trainer program into an international movement, elevating the practice of nurses and other healthcare providers in 149 countries. She has described this work as “sacred,” reflecting her respect for patients and families and her dedication to compassionate, high-quality care. Through her leadership in research and education and her role in establishing ELNEC, she has had a global impact on advancing a standard of nursing practice grounded in science, communication, dignity, and comfort.
