Back to News Jonas Nursing and the Flynn Foundation Award Six Scholarships to Advance Oncology Nursing Monday, August 25, 2025 | Press Release, Students WASHINGTON, D.C., August 25, 2025 – and the are pleased to announce the newest scholarship recipients to receive support through a joint scholarship program recognizing doctoral nursing students who seek to improve healthcare for cancer patients. The scholarships represent the fourth cohort of Jonas-Flynn Oncology Nurse DNP Scholars program (Jonas-Flynn Scholars), made possible by a grant from the two organizations. To date, twenty Jonas-Flynn scholarships totaling $550,000 in support have been awarded. The following recipients are all Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students: Emily Boucher, MSN, RN, is a Nursing Professional Development Practitioner in Oncology at Hartford Hospital. She is pursuing her DNP degree at the University of Hartford. Her career goal is to move into academia and support graduate nurses as they navigate the challenges of starting nursing careers. Ms. Boucher completed her BSN in 2017 at the University of Connecticut and her MSN in 2022 at the University of Hartford. Tracy Cavanaugh, MSN, BS, RN, is an Adult Gerontological Acute Care Nurse Practitioner at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and a Graduate Clinical Instructor at Stony Brook University School of Nursing. She is pursuing her DNP degree at Quinnipiac University in the Care of Populations track. Her career goals are to implement innovative healthcare policies for oncology patients and continue serving as a clinical instructor. Ms. Cavanaugh completed her BS in Allied Health Services in 2012 at the University of Connecticut, her BSN in 2013 at Quinnipiac University, and her MSN in 2018 at New York University. Brittany Fasanelli, BSN, RN, is a nurse in the Surgical ICU and Surgical Oncology Unit at Yale New Haven Hospital. She is pursuing her DNP degree at Fairfield University. Her career goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner focused on integrating empathy and patient-centered care as an advanced practice provider, with a long-term goal of becoming a nurse educator. Ms. Fasanelli was a Flynn Fellow at Greenwich Hospital in 2018 and completed her BSN in 2019 at Fairfield University. Sarah Matney, MS, BSN, RN, is the Chief Nursing Officer & Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations at Connecticut Children’s Hospital. She is pursuing her DNP degree at Case Western Reserve University. Her career goals are to disseminate evidence-based practices in pediatric healthcare and eventually transition into academia. Ms. Matney completed her BSN in 1998 at Pensacola Christian College and her MS in Organizational Leadership in 2017 from Quinnipiac University. Christina Matousek, MSN, BS, is a nurse manager and manager of the Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven, CT and Adjunct Clinical Faculty at Sacred Heart University. She is pursuing her DNP degree at the University of Connecticut with a specialization in Nursing Leadership. Her career goal is to educate undergraduate and graduate nursing students in the hospital setting. Ms. Matousek completed her BS in Psychology in 2006 at the University of Connecticut, her BSN in 2007 at Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing, and her MSN in 2019 at Sacred Heart University. Skylar Stowell, MS, BSN, RN, is a Nurse Practitioner in Pediatric Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is pursuing her DNP degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Her career goal is to become a nurse educator and develop stronger education programs for nurses, families, and other caretakers within hospitals. Ms. Stowell was a Flynn Fellow at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 2019 and completed her BSN in 2020 and her MSN in 2023 at the University of Pennsylvania. Out of respect for the wonderful quality of nursing and palliative care she received during her illness, the Flynn Fellowship was developed to help stimulate the career interests and foster the professional development of potential Oncology Nurses. Since its inception in 2014, 397 Flynn Fellows have completed this unique Fellowship program. Of the 330 Flynn Fellows in the workforce so far, 215 are already working as Oncology Nurses. “The leadership and vision that Mr. Flynn displays are critical to the development of oncology nursing practitioners who are experts in their field.
